"Low voltage" is one of those industry terms that gets used constantly and explained rarely. If you are planning a build-out or upgrading a property, it is worth understanding what the category covers, because it determines who you should be calling.
The short definition
Low voltage refers to systems that operate under roughly 50 volts. Where an electrician handles the power that runs your lights, outlets and equipment, a low voltage provider handles the systems that carry data and signal.
In practice, that means the infrastructure a modern building depends on but that nobody notices until it stops working.
What falls under low voltage
- Structured cabling — the Cat6, Cat6A and fiber that carries data through the building
- Security cameras and recording infrastructure
- Access control, including card readers, biometrics and electric door hardware
- Network infrastructure such as switches, routers, firewalls and wireless access points
- Alarm systems, motion sensors and door contacts
- Audio/video distribution, intercoms and paging
- Server racks, storage and power protection
Why using one provider matters
It is common to see this work split up: one company runs cable, another installs cameras, a third handles the network. It seems reasonable, and it causes a predictable problem.
These systems are interdependent. Cameras run over the network, over cable someone else installed, powered by switches a third party configured. When something fails, each vendor has a credible reason it is not their part, and you end up coordinating a dispute rather than getting a repair.
A single provider owning the full scope means one point of contact, one warranty, and no ambiguity about who is responsible when performance falls short.
When to bring one in
The best time is earlier than most people think. During new construction or a renovation, cabling installed before drywall goes up is dramatically cheaper and produces a cleaner result than the same work retrofitted afterwards.
It is also worth calling one when you are expanding into new space, when Wi-Fi coverage or network reliability has become a recurring complaint, when you are adding cameras or access control, or when you have inherited a wiring closet nobody can make sense of.
What separates good work from cheap work
The finished result should be documented. Every cable labelled at both ends, a port map recorded, network configuration handed over in writing. That documentation is what makes future service calls quick instead of archaeological.
Cable should be concealed properly rather than surface-mounted throughout, drops should be certified with test equipment that proves rated performance, and hardware should be chosen for service life and parts availability rather than for producing the lowest bid.
Those details cost slightly more on installation day and save considerably more over the years the system stays in the walls.
